Patanol - Anti-allergy Treatment
Brand name Patanol or Olopatadine is used to treat ocular (eye) symptoms of allergic conditions, such as inflammation, itching, watering, and burning. It is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of itching or watery eyes.

Drug Uses Patanol is a medicine prescribed to treat the symptoms of allergies. It is available as a liquid drop that is put in the eyes to keep them from itching caused by the allergies. Itchy eyes may become red. The usage of Patanol will treat the itching and the redness. How Taken You should use a drop in the affected eyes twice a day at intervals of 6 to 8 hours. Warnings/Precautions You should not use Patanol if you have a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection in your eye unless you are also receiving proper anti-infective treatment. Patanol falls into the FDA category C which means that it is not clear if is harmful for a fetus. Talk to your doctor before using Patanol in case you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before taking the medicine if you are breast feeding because Patanol passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. The medicine is not approved for usage by children younger than 3 years of age. Missed Dose In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Possible Side Effects Patanol is not expected to cause serious side effects. You should immediately search for medical help if you have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Other less serious adverse effects may occur. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Patanol if you have burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, or dryness of the eyes; swollen eyelids; a stuffy or runny nose; headache; or changes in taste. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects. Storage Patanol should be stored at 39°F to 86°F (4°C to 30°C). Overdose An overdose of Patanol is very unlikely to occur. However, if you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor or the local health-provider. If you ingest the drops, or if you drink a large amount of the fluid, call an emergency room for advice. More Information Avoid touching the dropper to any kind of a surface, to your eyes and hands. The dropper is sterile and if it gets contaminated your eye may get infected, too. You should not wear contact lenses when you apply the medicine because it contains a preservative (benzalkonium chloride). Wait about 15 minutes after you have applied the medicine and then insert the contact lenses. Do not use other eye drops unless your doctor tells you so.
