Drug Uses

Naprosyn is a medicine used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, tendonitis and bursitis, and acute gout. The medicine may also be used to relieve mild to moderate pain and to treat primary dysmenorrhea. Naprosyn Suspension is indicated for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in order to get maximum flexibility of the dosage depending on the weight of the patient.

How Taken

Naprosyn is available in the form of a normal tablet, a tablet with extended release or liquid. The medicine should be taken orally. It should be taken twice a day for treatment of arthritis, one extended-release tablet every 8 hours for treatment of gout and one normal tablet every 6-8 hours for pain. You may take Naprosyn with food or milk to avoid stomach problems.

Warnings/Precautions

Inform your doctor before taking Naprosyn if you have an allergy to aspirin or any other NSAIDs, have an ulcer or bleeding in your stomach, drink more than three alcoholic beverages a day, have liver disease, have kidney disease, have a coagulation (bleeding) disorder, have congestive heart failure, have fluid retention, have heart disease, or have high blood pressure. You may not be able to use Naprosyn or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment if you suffer from any of the above-mentioned conditions. Naprosyn falls into the FDA pregnancy category B which means it is not expected to harm a fetus. The medicine should not be used during the last three months of the pregnancy because it may affect the heart of the fetus. Consult your doctor before taking Naprosyn if you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor before using the medicine because it passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one. If you are using Naprosyn only when needed, take the missed dose if you need it and then wait for the prescribed period of time before you take the next dose.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your doctor if you notice blood in vomit or bloody, black, or tarry stools because these symptoms may signal damage of the stomach or intestines, and such damage may be dangerous. Discontinue the usage of Naprosyn and search for medical help if you experience: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); muscle cramps, numbness, or tingling; ulcers (open sores) in the mouth; rapid weight gain (fluid retention); seizures; decreased hearing or ringing in the ears; yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice); or abdominal cramping, heartburn, or indigestion. Other less serious adverse effects may occur. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Naprosyn if you have: dizziness or headache; nausea, diarrhea, or constipation; depression; fatigue or weakness; dry mouth; or irregular menstrual periods. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Naprosyn suspension should be stored at a room temperature, away from heat above 40°C (104°F). Keep the medicine in a light-resistant container. Naprosyn tablets should be stored at a room temperature, in a tightly-closed and light-resistant container.

Overdose

An overdose of Naprosyn may be signaled by drowsiness, heartburn, indigestion, nausea or vomiting, seizures. Consult your doctor or local health-provider centre in case you ingest many tablets or a large amount of the suspension by accident or on purpose.

More Information

You should not expose yourself to sunlight for a longer period because Naprosyn may enhance the sensitivity of the skin. You should avoid consuming alcohol or limit its consummation because alcohol increases the risk of stomach bleeding. Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any other dangerous activities. Naprosyn may cause dizziness. Avoid the above-mentioned activities in case you experience dizziness. Many medicines sold without prescription to treat cough, cold, allergy, and pain contain aspirin or other similar to Naprosyn medicines. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other prescribed or non-prescribed medicines.
