Drug Uses

Evista is a prescription medicine that is used by women after a menopause for treatment or prevention of a condition called osteoporosis. It is recommended that you combine the usage of Evista with calcium and vitamin D in case you don’t get enough of them through the food you consume.

How Taken

The common dosage of Evista is one tablet of 60 mg a day. The medicine may be taken at any time of the day with no regard to meals.

Warnings/Precautions

Before using Evista, inform your doctor in case you have a history of blood clots; stroke; cancer; increased triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood); or liver disease. You may not been able to use Evista or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment if you suffer from any of the above-mentioned diseases. Evista falls into the FDA pregnancy category X which means the medicine is known to cause birth defects to a fetus. Consult your doctor before taking Evista in case you are pregnant or may become pregnant during the treatment. Also, consult your doctor before taking Evista if you are breast feeding because it is not known if the medicine passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

A rare but serious side effect caused by Evista is the development of blood clots in the veins which may stop the blood flow and cause serious problems or even death. Consult your doctor immediately if you have had any of the following signs of blood clots in the legs, lungs or eyes: leg pain or a feeling of warmth in the calves, swelling of the legs, hands or feet, sudden chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood, sudden change in your vision, such as loss of vision or blurred vision. The adverse effects of Evista are usually mild and do not require discontinuation of the usage of Evista. The most common side effects are hot flashes and leg cramps. The hot flashes are more common during the first 6 months of the treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist in case you have any problems or questions related to the usage of Evista.

Storage

Evista should be stored at a controlled room temperature of 20o to 25oC (68o to 77oF); fluctuations allowed between 15o and 30oC (59o and 86oF).

Overdose

Cases of overdose in humans have not been reported. No specific antidote for Evista is available.

More Information

If you are going to have a surgery, inform your doctor that you are taking Evista. In case you require a long period of bed rest, you may have to discontinue the treatment with Evista temporary. Avoid sitting still for a long time during traveling. Alcohol and smoking may lead to enhanced bone loss. Talk to your doctor about the usage of cigarettes and alcohol.
