Drug Uses

Clarinex is an antihistamine used for relief the symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis). Clarinex is made of a long-acting tricyclic histamine antagonist with selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity.

How Taken

Clarinex is available in the form of tablets and is taken orally with or without food once a day. You should strictly follow the instructions on the prescription and contact your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand something. Clarinex should be taken exactly as prescribed; do not take larger doses of the medicine and do not take it more often.

Warnings/Precautions

Inform your doctor before taking Clarinex if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any medicine of the antihistamines’ group, if you have kidney disease; or liver disease. You may not been able to use Celexa or your dosage may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored during the treatment. Clarinex falls into the FDA pregnancy category C which means that it is not clear if it may harm a fetus. Consult your doctor before using Clarinex in case you are pregnant or you plan to become pregnant during the treatment with the medicine. Consult your doctor before using Clarinex in you are breast feeding because the medicine passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing baby.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the missed tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up the missed one.

Possible Side Effects

Adverse effects of Clarinex cannot be anticipated. Consult your doctor if any side effects develop or if they change their intensity. Your doctor will determine if it is safe to continue using the medicine. Among the common side effects caused by Clarinex are: dry mouth, fatigue, sleepiness, sore throat. Less common side effects may include: dizziness, dry throat, flu-like symptoms, muscle pain, nausea. Among the rare side effects caused by Clarinex are acute allergic reaction, hives, itching, rapid heartbeat, rash, shortness of breath, swelling.

Storage

Clarinex should be stored at a room temperature, away from heat, in its original tightly closed container. Keep the medicine away from children.

Overdose

The symptoms of a Clarinex overdose are not known very well. Keep in mind that excessive dosage of any medicine may have serious consequences. Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose. An overdose of Clarinex may be indicated by rapid heartbeat, sleepiness.

Be cautious when you drive, operate machinery or perform any dangerous activities. Clarinex may cause dizziness or drowsiness, although it is very unlikely. Avoid the above-mentioned activities if you experience dizziness or drowsiness.
