Drug Uses

Antivert is a drug from the group of antihistamines and it is used to block the effects of the naturally occurring histamine in the body. Antivert is used for the treatment of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. The medicine may also be helpful for the treatment of vertigo. Antivert may also be used for other purposes.

How Taken

Antivert is available in the form of regular and chewable tablets or capsules. For the treatment of motion sickness, Antivert should be taken one hour before the travel starts and the following doses are taken every 24 hours. Follow your doctor’s instructions if you use Antivert for the treatment of dizziness caused by ear condition. You should strictly follow the instruction on the label and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Take the medicine exactly as directed; do not take more or less of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. The chewable tablets may be chewed or swallowed.

Warnings/Precautions

Antivert may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery or performing other dangerous activities until you know how your body reacts to the medicine. Antivert will enhance the effects of depressants and alcohol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you don’t know which medicines are depressants. It is not known if Antivert passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking Antivert in case you are breast feeding.

Missed Dose

A missed dose of Antivert should not be a problem because the medicine is taken only when needed. If you take the medicine on a regular schedule and you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue taking your next doses at regular intervals. However, if it is already time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and take the regular dose. Do not take a double dose of this medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Discontinue the usage of Antivert and immediately search for medical help if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Antivert may also cause other less serious side effects. Consult your doctor but do not stop using Antivert if you experience drowsiness or dizziness; a dry mouth (may be relieved by sugarless gum, ice chips, saliva substitutes, or other products if bothersome); blurred vision; nervousness; insomnia; or constipation. You may also experience other adverse effects that are not mentioned in this leaflet. Consult your doctor if you experience some other side effects.

Storage

Antivert should be kept in tightly closed and light-resistant containers. The medicine is stored at a controlled room temperature of 15°-30°C (59°-86° F).

Overdose

Symptoms of an Antivert overdose may include unusual excitability, drowsiness, hallucinations, very slow or shallow breathing, and seizures. Immediately search for medical help if you suspect an overdose.

Antivert may enhance the effects of other medicines which cause drowsiness among which are antidepressants, alcohol, antihistamines, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and muscle relaxants. Inform your doctor about all other prescribed or not prescribed medicine that you are using and consult your doctor before you start or stop any medicines.
